Picture this– An artist working at her easel illuminated by north light pouring through a wall of twelve-feet-high windows. Susan Carlin’s studio is right out in the open at Nueva Street Gallery where she can chat with visitors while she paints. Although many, if not most, of her current paintings use photographic references, she painted for years almost exclusively from life. That meant that she usually was able to have a conversation with her sitter while she painted. She believes that is what “hard-wired” in her preference for company as she paints. Working on a portrait (or still life or landscape) while answering questions or getting to know a new friend… well, she considers this heaven. In addition to chatting with people in person, Susan has broadcast weekly live online painting demonstrations for three years now, chatting with her viewers as she makes progress on a painting. She has broadcast from both her home studio and the studio at the gallery. Those who have commissioned a painting have enjoyed the opportunity to watch part of the process, and other painters have expressed their interest in watching over her shoulder and joining in the chat.
Susan offers an occasional painting workshop, both in-person and online. If you’re interested in attending a workshop (or coordinating one where you live), let us know. susan@susancarlin.com
