Brian St. John is a life-long resident of Bexar County, Texas. After receiving his MFA in painting in 1986 from the University of Texas at San Antonio, St. John began teaching for The San Antonio Art Institute, and Palo Alto College, and is currently a full time professor of art and Dept. Chairman at St. Mary’s University where he has taught since 1989.
St. John’s early work and education was focused in formal abstraction. In recent years, an interest in regional early Texas and New Mexico painters has resulted in the investigation of the landscape as subject for St. John.
“I find the same sense of subtle quietness and possibilities in a tree lined field and the sky above as I do in large, non-objective paintings. In each; shifts in color, value, and form evoke in the viewer the possibility of an internal intimate space.”
